What’s in a name?

Pocock

xVIII n. [ɛ́cks ét; ex-eight; X8]

We have heard some interesting pronunciations and interpretations of the name of our newest boat. To set the record straight, the rationale behind the name was twofold.

If you have been lucky enough to see the boat in person, you know the ‘x’ shape is a dominating visual element of this industry-leading shell. The ‘x’ concept easily lent itself to being a centerpiece for the boat name.

The idea to use Roman numerals for ‘eight’ was a nod to rowing traditions and our 107 year company history. In the past, Roman numerals were to denote boat class.

Most relevant to our company, it was the way George and Stanley wrote down incoming boat orders.

While this convention has fallen by the wayside in North America, Roman numerals are still prevalent in New Zealand and Australian rowing.

At the Shop we hypothesized this is because the Antipodeans also use Roman numerals when referring to 15-player rugby union teams (the ‘first XV’ is the starting lineup of a rugby team). Given the popularity of both rugby and rowing in these countries, perhaps the athletes, coaches, and those writing about sport were able to keep the convention alive?

If anyone out there has any insights on why this might be the case, let us know in the comments section below!

While the name of the boat may harken back to rowing traditions, there is nothing about the xVIII that is traditional or antiquated. If you have any questions about our newest shell, please contact John Tytus.
