Pocock Boat Breaks Distance World Record |
A specially designed Pocock shell outfitted
with a small outboard motor recently broke the world record for traveling
the greatest distance through the water on one gallon of fuel.
The record-breaking attempt proved what many rowers already know;
there is nothing more efficient moving through the water than a Pocock shell.

The boat didn’t just break the world record, it shattered it. The old record
was 67 miles on a single gallon of gas. Using a 2-hp Honda outboard motor, the Pocock
boat traveled more than 103 miles on just one gallon of gas.
The man behind this endeavor was David Seidman, executive editor of Boating Magazine.
With the rising cost of fuel becoming an issue with boaters, Seidman decided to attempt
to break the world record for boating fuel efficiency and write a feature article about
it in a recent issue of Boating Magazine. Seidman realized a racing shell would be the ideal hull shape for his record-breaking attempt
and contacted Pocock Racing Shells.
“People come to us when they want something done right. Our carbon fiber work
and craftsmanship are second to none,” said Bill Tytus, Pocock president.
Working with Seidman, Pocock came up with a way to attach a small outboard motor to the
specially designed Pocock shell. Pocock designed an asymmetrical catamaran float with the
least amount of displacement drag that attached to the shell for balance. The shell also
had a modified cockpit that allowed the driver to sit facing forward.
In his Boating Magazine article, Seidman wrote: “Wouldn’t it be cool to build the most
efficient boat ever, one that would almost run on fumes?”
With the help of Pocock Racing Shells, that’s just what he did.
